Author Interview

1. What inspired you to become a Multicultural, IR or BWWM Romance writer?

Bottom line, I love white men. LOL! I am a black woman and white man romance and interracial relationship supporter. This is a personal lifestyle choice so of course I wanna write something that I’m interested in and that reflects me.  I always have been extremely attracted to white guys so my books come from the heart concerning that aspect especially. I wanted to write stories that showcase couples I love and for women readers in BWWM relationships.

2. Name at least two (2) authors that you admire who write Multicultural, IR or BWWM Romance?

Okay, LaVerne Thompson and Shyla Colt. I love how LaVerne Thompson writes BWWM in subgenres that a lot of BWWM writers don’t venture into like fantasy. She writes a lot of different stories and fascinating plots that make you think. She’s also a very supportive person and positive figure in the genre. Shyla Colt is just super talented. I’ve enjoyed her work even before we became acquainted. She writes similar to me in terms of providing different plots and experiences from book-to-book and not relying on outdone tropes or stuff that’s been done over and over. Shyla keeps you guessing.

3. What types or genre of books do you enjoy reading? What are you currently reading?

My number one genre is mystery and crime fiction. That’s why I write these stories intertwined with BWWM romances. It’s the best of both worlds. When I first started writing my stories I was probably the only one mixing mysteries and romantic suspense with BWWM romance. It was a passion because no one else was writing these at the time. I’m happy to see more romantic suspense BWWM authors on the scene now even though there could be more. Black heroines can be in romantic suspense and mysteries. We need to get over this thing where black characters have to be in the same type of stories. Black characters can be in anything. Currently, I’m swamped with my own projects so I’m not reading anything at the moment.

4. Are you working on anything new? If so, when can we expect it to be released?

I’m always working on something new. I have releases planned for (hopefully) October as well as other books I’m working on that I will release in coming months. Besides that I’m always writing so I have things in the pipeline.

5. Do you have any scheduled upcoming events; such as book signings, interviews, etc.?

When I was with Simon and Schuster years ago I did a few signings but I quickly realized how worthless they were for many signings. Now that I am self-publishing I don’t do events or signings. I am not someone who loves to be around a lot of people and go places all the time so I do my interaction and promotion online. Events are fine if you find them fun but they are not my cup of tea and I’d rather spend my money and time on things I feel are better for sales.

6. Where do you expect to be in your career as an author five (5) years from now?

I don’t like to answer these types of questions. LOL! When I first started in this business 20 years ago, I answered this question all the time then learned we never know what will happen five or 10 years from now so I don’t even think about it anymore. I just go with the flow and execute my goals to the best of my ability from day-to-day but I don’t wonder where I will be or what will happen in my life years from now. I have plans and goals and just do my best to work toward them. Life takes too many twists and turns to even guess.

7. What advice can you give to new authors who’s interested in writing in this genre?

My advice is for newbies all-around and not specifically for this genre. My advice is to stay in your own lane. Let me be blunt. Like I said, I’ve been around this industry for a LONG time. My best advice is to stay away from the majority of folks in this industry, authors especially. Once you find you a small group of POSITIVE authors you can trust who you know are good people, work with them and cross promote. Help each other out. Stay out of the streets concerning other authors. Don’t put yourself all out there with a wide circle of authors because let me tell you something, the writing industry is one of the harshest industries in the world. You might not know it but it’s full of a bunch of backstabbing, cutthroat, nasty, hateful, vengeful, jealous people, and sadly these are mainly other authors.

It’s sad because I’ve always been a helpful and kind person to others but I’ve learned the hard way in dealing with many folks throughout my years in this industry that you can’t trust a lot of folks. Many people are out here just for themselves and will stab you in the back to get ahead. So if you want to write, stay to yourself except for a few authors who you know are good people. I only communicate with a small group of authors who I trust. I’ll support and work with anyone who does the same but I don’t open myself up to a wide circle of people. Trust me you will regret it. Be smart and watch the people you choose to hang around. The ones you think you can depend on the most are the ones who are the first to stab you in the back. Choose your friends and confidantes wisely.

Oh and another piece of advice, after honing your skills and researching the business, self-publish. The day is over where you need to give your rights and money away to a publisher. Be independent. Self-publishing is the best choice for BWWM and most genres of romance.

I wish everyone luck in their journey!

Book Excerpt ~ Dead Weight

“Oh.” Jade bumped into Denny in the hall that night. She almost dropped her powder and deodorant, which she clutched to her chest along with her nightgown. “I need to take a shower.”

“Yeah.” He kept his eyes low. “Can we talk?”

She held her breath. “About what?”

He went into her room. “Close the door.”

She walked in, following his order. “Something wrong?”

“I want to kiss you so bad.”

She stepped back, gasping. “Denny.”

He sat on the bed, locking his gaze on the floor. “And I want to do much more.”

            “Eh—”

“I want you, Jade.” He looked at her. “I’m not saying I love you. Course not, but I’m having feelings toward you and they’re getting hard to ignore.”

“We have to ignore them.” She eased to the dresser. “It wouldn’t be sensible not to.”

“I’m not saying we should do anything about them.” He put his hands together. “I’m just a straight forward person, and I say what’s on my mind.”

            “I’ve noticed.”

“You gotta understand how it feels to be a man who hasn’t had a woman in a long time.” He moved his hand across the top of his head. “I haven’t had a woman this close since Marcy.”

Jade lowered herself into the chair by the dresser. “I understand.”

“And you’re a very attractive woman, Jade.” He exhaled as if that confession came from the depths of his soul. “I was attracted to you the minute I saw you laying in the street.”

“Denny, what’s the point of this conversation?”

“The point is…” He lifted his head, penetrating her with his eyes. “I don’t know what the point is.”

            She grinned.

“I guess I just wanted to tell you how I felt. Your eyes tell me you want me to kiss you.”

“We can’t get involved, Denny.” She held the gown and other items in her lap. “It’s best if we let things stay the way they are.”

            “Why?”

“Because my life is a mess.”

“Man.” He closed his eyes, exhaling. “Just the way you smell gets to me. When you use a towel your perfume is all over it. Did you know that?”

She clenched the items against her bosom. “Denny—”

“I love watching the way your lips move when you talk and the delicate way you eat.”

“Look—”

“It feels good to come home from a hard day’s work and have a beautiful woman waiting for me.”

“Ignore this. My life is dangerous, and I won’t put you and Lucy in jeopardy.”

            “Clayton you mean?”

“I would hate myself if anything happened to you two because of me.” She fought tears. “Denny, I’m living in fear right now.”
