#BloggingTheBlogger Brittanie Tate @NoturAvrgeBritt #BlogSeries #2 #BookBloggers

Blogging The Blogger (BTB) is a special feature dedicated to those awesome Book Bloggers. As a book blogger myself, I know how busy our life can be plus the little recognition that we may get. I think it's about time we change that. We sacrifice a lot to bring you awesome content all while managing our busy lives. Therefore, I've decided to begin this blog series for my fellow bloggers. Each Tuesday I will interview the ‘bloggers behind the blogs.’

Hello everyone! I am honored to introduce to you, Brittanie Tate, “the blogger behind the blog,” NoturAvrgeStoryTime.

The Blogger

Hello Brittanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. How are you today?

Hi Vaneka, I’m doing great and it was no problem.

How did you come up with the name for your blog, “NoturAvrgeStoryTime“?

I was trying to find a name that represented me and that strayed away from my NoturAvrgeBritt social media name.

When did you create your blog & why did you decide to create such a blog?

I created my blog sometime in the beginning of this year. I had been going back and forth with putting myself out there and talking about the things I like, such as books, authors for a book tube channel. But after months of putting it off, because of nerves, I decided to start a WordPress and Tumblr instead.

Who is your potential audience?

I’d like to think my target audience are African American men and women who love to read as much as I do, or just looking for a good book to read.

What type of content can readers find on your blog?

Most of my content are books by African American authors; anywhere from Fiction, Urban Fiction, Self-Help, Christian Fiction and literary classics like Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”.

Are you a full time blogger? Is your blog monetized?

I like to think of myself as a part-time blogger, since I just started and post everything by myself. But I hope to be a full-time book blogger soon because it’s something that I really love doing.

What services do you offer to authors &/ other literary professionals? How can they contact you?

I haven’t even gotten that far yet, as far as offering services. I do offer book reviews, Q&A’s or spotlights if approached. You can contact me through email or just message me on any of my social media links.

Do you have any monthly or annual events or specials that you’ve created on your blog?

No, but stay tuned I’ve got some things I’ve been working on to expand my blog and its segments.

Have you ever been discouraged as a blogger? How did you deal with it?

When I first started to tell people what I wanted to do, no one really knew what it was. They would ask me, what’s a blog? What are your going to write or talk about? But it was never really any discouraging going on. There were doubters and that’s fine. Since I’m the type to ignore negativity, I just kept it moving and focused on what I was trying to do and why.

Do you have any advice to give to book bloggers that are struggling in any way?

Well, my biggest challenge was putting myself out there, because I didn’t think people would care or was even interested in Books. However, my followers and friends proved me wrong. So I would say, if you want to start a book blog, do it! There aren’t too many of us out there, especially “Black” book bloggers.

Why should readers follow your blog? What makes your blog different from other book blogs?

You should definitely follow my blog because you are going to get a variety of different books to choose from and all written by African American authors.

Name some awesome book bloggers you follow & would recommend readers to follow?

Of course I follow you Vaneka, but there’s also Coffee Breaks and Bookmarks, The Writer’s Inkwell, and BookBug 2012. Honestly trying to find a book blog that talks about the type of books I like to read is hard. There really aren’t as many as I thought it would be going into it.

The Person

What are some of your interests other than blogging & anything to do with the literary industry?

I love reading, writing stories, poetry or songs and listening to music. I am working on my first manuscript so that I can one day can myself a blogger and a published author.

Do you have a family?

I don’t have my own family just yet but give me a couple of years to accomplish my goals and you can count on it. But, seriously I have my mother, two sisters (I’m the middle child), 2 nephews and a niece, my best friend and my boyfriend.

What is your occupation?

I am a Liberal Arts Student for now, but my dream occupation is to be a literary agent. But until then, getting a job at a bookstore would be heaven on earth.

How do you manage to balance blogging, school, family & “me time”?

Now that I’ve added school on my plate and I’m not working I have more time to do all the things I want to do such as read, write, blog and what not. But I’ve learned the secret to finding balance is having an agenda book or monthly planner. They’ve really been my best friend this year.

What are you passionate about?

My passions consist of everything that I love which is reading and writing. I know that sounds cliché but those are the times when I’m at peace with myself. When I have music playing too.

What is your biggest fear?

I’ve thought about this millions of times and each time it all boils down to not following through with God’s plan for my life.

What is one thing about you that most people don’t know &/or wouldn’t believe?

I think most people would be surprised that I can sing and have been singing in school and choirs since I was 5 years old. My younger sister and I had a little gospel group called Some Little Angels.

What do you like to do for fun?

When I’m alone I like to listen to music, write, go to the library/bookstores, museums, hiking, watch movies or YouTube videos. When I am with friends or family I like to go to amusement parks, lounges, bowling, play video games and karaoke.

How would your family & friends describe you?

My friends and family would describe me as beautiful, smart, loving and caring. Loyal, funny, goofy, goal minded, weird, and a little book nerd. (lol) They would also say that I’ll seem shy until I get to know you and that I’m really nice and sweet until I observe something that turns me off about you and would no longer want to see, hang out or talk to that person anymore.

Where is your dream vacation destination located?

My dream vacation is to go to Europe. If I have to choose an island, it’ll be Fiji. I can just see myself chilling on a waterfront bungalow enjoying the view with a book, something in my glass and my music blasting.

Do you prefer tea, coffee or soda?

I am a heavy coffee and tea drinker. I’ll drink that or water before I’ll drink soda or even juice.

What would you rather have more time to do?

I wish I had more time to focus on finishing my manuscript, and get out of this writing slump. Lately, I’ve really been focusing on school, so I want to get back to a place where everything just flows.

#LiteraryStardom Chatting with Keisha Simpson-Baker, Your Next Fav #Author

Literary Stardom is a spotlight for 'New Authors' that has 5 or less books under their belt. This new feature is targeted to highlight new authors because many new authors are often overlooked and readers don’t want to take a chance on purchasing a book by someone ‘new.’ However, many readers are missing out because these new authors have a lot of fire spitting from their pen! Some of you seem to forget that your favorite author was once new & you took a chance with them. So, my message is to stop overlooking these talented authors and give them a chance! Our 2nd Literary Star is Keisha Simpson-Baker.

Newly released author, Keisha Simpson-Baker, is originally from Compton, CA, and currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. Her hometown knowledge of the inner city of Los Angeles is reflected in her writing. Keisha also spent time living in Wisconsin where she attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Other than writing, Keisha enjoys spending time with family, cooking and baking.

Chatting with Keisha Simpson-Baker

I had the honor of sitting down & chatting with Keisha about her literary career. Tune in to hear what she had to say.

Can you please tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Keisha Baker and I’m originally from Compton, CA. I still live in the Los Angeles area with my son and husband. I enjoy reading, writing, traveling and spending time with my family.

Your publisher is Pleasure Principle Publications. Why did you decide to sign with them?

I signed with Pleasure Principal Publishing because I liked the fact that it is a black owned company and deals specifically with urban fiction. I felt like they would be best to market my specific book. They specialize in online kindle versions of books and I’ve had quite a bit of success in that area.

Who is your targeted audience and what message are you trying to relay in your writing?

My targeted audience is African American young adult/new adult. I am trying to tell a great entertaining yet realistic story that people can relate to.

With thousands of books being released each day and new authors steady emerging, how are you going to stand out? Why should readers give your book(s) a try versus others in the same genre?

I think readers will really enjoy the story I’m telling mainly because the main character Imani is so relatable. She’s the type of girl that we all know and love, and has the timeless tale of a high school relationship. I really hope readers give me (and Imani) a shot!

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?

I would have loved to been responsible of “Roll of Thunder: Hear my Cry” by Mildred Taylor. It is a wonderful piece of historical fiction, and one of the first books of that genre that I’ve read as a child. That story has stuck with me for many years.

I'm sure you're a reader as well, who are some of your favorite authors and what's on your ‘To Be Read’ List?

My favorite authors are Sister Soulja, and Lisa See. I always love a great historical fiction story so that is what grabs my attention and what is on my “to be read” list.

Are you a full-time or part-time writer and how long has it been since you published your first book?

I am a part time writer and I published my first and only book in January 2016. I am working on completing my second hopefully by this summer.

What inspired you to become a writer?

I absolutely love to read but this past year I had been on a lull on finding great stories, so I said to myself, “you know what I’ll write the type of book I want to read,” and I did just that.

So tell us, what books have you written?

The book I have written is 'A Compton Love Story.'

What genre is ‘A Compton Love Story’ and why did you choose to write in that genre?

It’s an urban fiction, coming of age story. I’m not yet 30 years old so it’s easy for me to imagine a coming into adulthood situation. I also lived and grew up in a predominately black urban environment so there’s a lot that I can draw upon.

Give us an insight into your main character(s). What does he/she do that is so special?

Imani is a high school senior from Compton, California, and she's on the fast track to success. She has everything she thought she ever wanted until she meets and falls hard for a young man, Braxton Carter. I think the readers will love going through Imani’s story and seeing the decisions that she makes while her relationship progresses.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from ‘A Compton Love Story’?

An actress I see playing the lead character would be Yara Shahidi.

How do you connect and interact with readers?

I have an active Facebook author page “Keisha Baker.” I also respond to email Keisha.simpson@yahoo.com

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

The editing was hard. Constantly re-reading and stressing on every sentence was hard- especially with the dialogue because it’s something that has to be realistic. I was constantly questioning myself, “Is that something a 17 year old girl would say?”

Do you think that giving away books for free works? Why or why not?

It does help to start off a writing career, it gets your name out there and will leave people wanting more.

Why do you feel that you will be reader’s next ‘favorite author’?

I hope to produce entertaining reading material for a black audience. I hope that my writings fill a void that I had felt when I first started writing. I like that my work is current and fresh and takes into account a lot of today’s social media and technology issues into the storyline which is something you won’t get from earlier writings.

Where do you see yourself in your career as a writer in 5 years?

I hope that I continue to produce great quality stories that my readers love, but I also hope to cross over into historical fiction which is my favorite choice of reading

Based off what you’ve learned in your writing career, what advice would you give to a new and emerging author about the publishing industry?

I would say to write the story you want to tell and not to give in too much to what publishers want. You’ll find your audience. I also say look for the small independent publishers that specialize in your specific genre. My publisher Pleasure Principle Publications has been terrific in helping me navigate through this world.

How do you think the publishing industry will be in the future?

I think the publishing industry will be much more directed by the people telling publishers what they want and having more interaction with publishers.

What can readers expect from you next?

The next book will be a continuation with the characters from my first book. They’ll face new challenges through their lives and work through them.

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.

Imani and Braxton are a young couple from Compton, California simply trying to make it work. College bound and both from loving homes, they make decisions that completely alter the course of their lives and struggle to keep things afloat.

A Compton Love Story: Imani and Braxton

Imani is a high school senior from Compton, California, and she's on the fast track to success. She has it all; the grades, good looks, family and friends that love and care for her. She has everything she thought she ever wanted until she meets and falls hard for a young man, Braxton Carter.
Her excitement of having her first real boyfriend is short lived after Braxton's ex-fling Kayla comes to surface and publicly announces her displeasure. Even worse is when Imani finds that Braxton's family doesn't care for her, and her own mother warns her about taking their teenage relationship so seriously. The adversity seems to bring couple closer together instead of tearing them apart.
As their relationship progresses, Imani and Braxton find themselves in a very difficult situation. They have to go against the people they love the most in order to do what they feel is the right decision for their lives.

#BloggingTheBlogger Shaterica Washington @BookBeautyChron #BlogSeries #1

Blogging The Blogger (BTB) is a special feature dedicated to those awesome Book Bloggers. As a book blogger myself, I know how busy our life can be plus the little recognition that we may get. I think it's about time we change that. We sacrifice a lot to bring you awesome content all while managing our busy lives. Therefore, I've decided to begin this blog series for my fellow bloggers. Each Tuesday I will introduce you to a ‘blogger behind the blog.’

I am honored to introduce to you, Shaterica Washington, “the blogger behind the blog,” Book Beauty Chronicles.

The Blogger

VIP Hello Shaterica, thanks for sharing your story with us. How are you today?

Blogger I’m doing great. Thanks for asking! How are you?

VIP That’s good, I’m doing great as well. How did you come up with the name for your blog “Book Beauty Chronicles“?

Blogger Coming up with the name of my blog was pretty hard because the first few names were taken. I wanted something that represented me as a person as well as the purpose of my blog. Of course the word "Book" is a key component in the title because my blog is mainly about "Books"; I like the word "Beauty" because it is a representation of various things; the beauty within me and the beauty I find in reading some of the most amazing stories written by people that look like me.  I decided to utilize the word "Chronicles" to keep a record of the books I read and the reviews.

VIP Amazing! I love the name of your blog & that’s such a creative & unique way of naming it. I’m actually considering renaming my blog as well …I want to give it a unique & personal name. When did you create your blog & why did you decide to create such a blog?

Blogger I originally created my blog November 2015 but I didn't launch it until April 1, 2016.

I read a lot, at least 10-15 books a month, and I enjoy telling people about the books I read and recommending new books or series to my fellow readers so I decided to write them down and post my reviews
about them. My blog specifically expose and promote literature written by African American authors mainly because there is not enough mainstream media exposure for African American authors like there is for authors of other races like James Patterson, J K Rowling, or Jane Austen.

African American authors are always grouped together, regardless of the genre they write in it’s GROUPED under one label. Secondly, you may find two shelves of books at libraries, department stores such as Wal-Mart or chain bookstores such has Half-Price Books, but there is still not much exposure being provided. I believe that African American authors don't get nearly enough credit and exposure for their work. So I'm hoping to be able to do that with my blog.

VIP I completely agree! Those are the same reasons (among others) why I started my blog plus the many literary services I provide. African American authors just don’t get enough exposure or recognition & that is a big problem in my book. Who is your potential audience?

Blogger My potential audience is anybody who enjoy reading as much as I do. My blog doesn't just focus on urban/street lit because I read across various genres. I read Christian Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Motivational/Self-Help, Drama/Suspense, Thrillers, and Crime/Mystery, etc. The only books I don't read are Paranormal and Sci-Fi fantasy. Nothing against it, I just prefer to watch things like that on television instead.

VIP Readers are our number 1 audience. I too read various genres. I enjoy a variety of genres. What type of content can readers find on your blog?

Blogger My blog consist of book reviews, author interviews, author Q&A’s, character interviews, literary events, blog tour hosting and various tips and resources for the newly and aspiring writers. I will also be posting things about me and my life as well. I'm an aspiring author so I want to share my journey with my readers. Writing my first book is a walk of faith; I have always wanted to write a book and visualized myself being a bestselling author. I had allowed fear of failure to hold me back but I’ve decided that I was going to step out on faith in 2016 and do it. If it works it works and if it doesn't it doesn't, but I will never know unless I try.

VIP You are absolutely right! That’s one of my plans this year as well, however time has not been my friend. I’m a very busy woman. I will get to it though. Are you a full time blogger? Is your blog monetized?

Blogger No, I am not a full time blogger although I am aspiring to be one day. My blog is not monetized yet but I have been researching various ways to monetize my blog. I do have advertising space available for business owners, publishers, etc.

VIP Well, you are already on your way. That is a source of monetizing. What services do you offer to authors &/ other literary professionals? How can they contact you?

Blogger I currently offer services in the areas of virtual assistance, social media promotion, proofreading, and writing/editing. I can be reached via email at bookbeautychronicles@gmail.com or by phone at 832.384.4350.

VIP That’s awesome! We may need to talk about virtual assistance once we’re done. Do you have any monthly or annual events or specials that you’ve created on your blog?

Blogger As of right now I don't. I will be posting and advertising other literary events that will be taking place around the world. Book fairs, book festivals, book signings, award shows, etc. I will be advertising on my website. I do have a few blog series that I am currently working, which will be pertaining to authors and publishers.

VIP That’s good to hear. Maybe we can collaborate in the future. Have you ever been discouraged as a blogger? How did you deal with it?

Blogger Yes, being a blogger has been discouraging at times because "Book Blogs" are not as popular as other blogs that may talk about other topics such as celebrity gossip, fashion, food, make-up, etc. So getting readers to visit and follow your blog can be a tedious process. I deal with it by reminding myself daily why I decided to blog, I didn't do it for money nor for awards or accolades. I did it to share my love of reading and to be able to promote African American authors who are normally overlooked.

VIP Yes, I definitely can agree with you on that. Sometimes I be wanting to throw in the towel myself but then, like you, I remind myself why I do what I do and I keep pushing forward. Do you have any advice to give to book bloggers that are struggling in any way?

Blogger Yes, don't allow thing such as money, followers, or readers to discourage you from blogging about your favorite past time. Blog about it because it is something that you enjoy doing don't allow things to take the fun out of it.

VIP That’s great advice! When it’s no longer fun & becomes a burden, we aren’t loving it anymore. Not letting everything or anyone steal our passion & love for blogging is a key to our success. Why should readers follow your blog? What makes your blog different from other book blogs?

Blogger Readers should follow my blog because I have a lot of things to share. Like I said before I'm an avid reader of various genres and work by African American authors. I don't just read the same type of story, with same type of plot, from the same publishers. Looking for a good read to encourage you in your time of struggles, I got you. Want to read something based on true story, I got you. Looking for something with some hot and steamy sex scenes, I got you. You want something with some drama and scandals, I got you. Need something to satisfy your inner "Private Investigation and CSI skills," I got you. Maybe you want something that intrigues that alter ego of yours, you know the "the hardcore thug", I got you. Or maybe you are a history buff, I got that too.

VIP Name some awesome book bloggers you follow & would recommend readers to follow?

Blogger Honestly, I only follow one book blogger right now which is yours, Vaneka Miles (Vaneka’s VIP Literary Services). I'm currently researching other book bloggers to follow; but I can be very picky when it comes to people I follow. I prefer bloggers who update their blog at least once a week, it doesn't matter if they focus on one genre or multiples, I also like bloggers who are honest. I don't want to read the same review that you gave for the last six books you posted about. If there are any bloggers who want me to follow their blog they can email me the link to read at bookbeautychronicles@gmail.com.

VIP Awww, thank you! I am honored! I follow you as well. I too, am very picky because I like consistency and honesty is a must as well.

The Person

VIP What are some of your interests other than blogging & anything to do with the literary industry?

Blogger I have a lot of interest outside of blogging and the literary industry. I'm in the process of starting a social enterprise and a networking social organization for women. I also am the Founder & Executive Director of Empowered Girls! Youth Foundation which is a non-profit organization that promotes self-sufficiency and increase employable skills for teenage girls and young adult women ages 16-24. Our main focus are teenage girls and young adult women who have been incarcerated or in the process of being released.

VIP That’s amazing! Congratulations on your foundation. It’s great to help others & make a difference in their lives. Do you have a family?

Blogger Yes, I have a family. I have been married for almost seven years and we have two beautiful children, my daughter Kamryn (Kam) who is 10 and my son Dondrick (DJ) who is 8.

VIP You have babies, lol. My youngest is about to turn 12. What is your occupation?

Blogger I have been working in Higher Education administration for nine years now. I currently work as an Administrative Assistant for a university in Houston, Texas. I have a desire to work in continuing education and workforce development as well as become a vocational community college educator.

VIP How do you manage to balance blogging, work, family & “me time”?

Blogger I block times throughout the day for certain things. Monday-Thursday is my main workdays and Fridays are half days so from noon-4 on is my "me" time. Saturdays and Sundays are spent with my family which are generally filled with days at park for football and cheerleading. Sundays I’m at church and with my parents and sisters. I generally blog and write at night once the kids are sleep or during breaks at work.

VIP You are one busy woman! Most people don’t realize how busy we are and/or take for granted the work that we do. What are you passionate about?

Blogger I'm passionate about a lot of things but I will have to say my passion definitely lies within helping other people succeed and reach their goals in life. I enjoy working with youth and young adults about various choices and issues they go through in life. I have had a hard journey in life and I don’t mind sharing my story of what I went through to help others get through it as well.

VIP What is your biggest fear?

Blogger I would say my biggest fear is failure which is something that I am currently working through.

VIP What is one thing about you that most people don’t know& /or wouldn’t believe?

Blogger I'm really an open book. I guess one thing that people who aren’t close to me or that don’t know me is that I am 28 years old and I do not know how to drive. Very long story but I’m working on that too. LOL

VIP Now, that is something that I never expected for you to say. What have you been waiting for? It’s good that you are working on it now. What do you like to do for fun?

Blogger Honestly fun for me is hanging out with my family at my parents’ house. I absolutely love hanging with my siblings and my nieces and nephews. We can seriously have our very own reality television show and we will have people rolling from start to finish. If I’m not doing that, then fun is me and my husband up at 3am playing dominoes and eating tacos from the taco truck.

VIP How would your family & friends describe you?

Blogger My family would describe me as a strong and loving person with a big heart. A girl with big dream and a positive attitude on life.

VIP How sweet. Where is your dream vacation destination located?

Blogger Truthfully, my dream vacation is anywhere out of Texas. LOL. No but seriously, my dream vacation is being locked away at a secluded resort bungalow in Fiji with my husband.

VIP Do you prefer tea, coffee or soda?

Blogger That’s kind of hard to decide but I would have to say a love coffee and soda about the same depending on time of day. Before noon, I prefer coffee and then after that I desire soda. I like tea but it’s not something that I actually crave. I will drink it if I have nothing to drink.

VIP What would you rather have more time to do?

Blogger I wish I had more time to travel. I would love to take a road trip across the US to visit and explore what our country has to offer.
